Everyone's talking about these Irish-made sweet potato oven chips

Actually crispy sweet potato fries at home. Yes.

A PERFECT SWEET potato fry is a thing of beauty. They’re fairly easy to make yourself in theory, but homemade ones often lack the pleasing crispness of restaurant fries.

So what to do if you’re craving some perfect sweet potato action at home?

Irish company Strong Roots has launched sweet potato chips you can bung in the oven, and they’ve been receiving a warm reception from Irish foodies and fitness fans:

We can confirm they are very delicious for an oven-baked chip - light, sweet, and perfectly crispy. But are they better for you than the average fry?

Here’s the nutritional information for Strong Roots’ sweet potato fries:

As you can see, they’re gluten free and high in Vitamins A and C - there’s also very little salt and a nice bit of fibre, but a fair amount of sugar (as is to be expected with sweet potatoes).

Popular oven chip brand McCain does not claim to be gluten free – their Home Chips have the same amount of saturated fat, more salt, and more carbohydrates, but much less sugar.

So yes, they are just a tad healthier than the average oven chip, but as with everything, don’t get carried away.

A 500g bag of sweet potato fries costs €3.99, and they’re available in Super Valu and Dublin independent supermarkets like Fresh, Morton’s and Fallon & Byrne.
